Free Press Marathon wrap-up with Clint Verran

Clint Verran finished second.

Lake Orion native Clint Verran, 33, finished second in Sunday's men's race of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar marathon in 2:18:21. Verran, a member of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project -- an elite distance running club in Rochester Hills -- made his marathon debut in Detroit 10 years ago. For the past few weeks, he has shared training tips with readers heading into the marathon. Here's his final entry -- until next year!

Annual run boasts record field

Kenichiro Maemura of Novi celebrates his finish of 4 hours, 7 minutes and 8 seconds at Campus Martius. The 48-year-old was among the 3,598 people taking part in the full Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon on Sunday.

It was a human cornucopia of ages, shapes and motivations. While the pros ran for money and to qualify for other marathons, the majority of participants ran the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon for fun and personal achievement.

Don't forget all the kids on race day

Some runners got into the spirit of the season during the Detroit Free Press Flagstar Marathon in Detroit, Sunday, October19, 2008.

Every one of the more than 18,000 participants in Sunday's 31st Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon had a story to tell -- of training challenges, race-day thrills and relationships deepened along the way. Here are just a few:

Cheering section moves Verran

Clint Verran, who finished second this year, said he plans to enter next year's marathon. His family and friends came out to support him. "It seemed like 90% of the people out there were cheering for me," he said.

Clint Verran ran 26.2 miles and needed a strong finishing kick to keep second place at the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon. But for a while during the race, it seemed as if his support team would come close to matching that mileage.

Premier runner dominates race

David Cheruiyot of Kenya won the Free Press/Flagstar Marathon in 2:16:44 on Sunday. His only complaint -- it was a little cold. "I feel good, and the course was good, but the weather was not good," he said.

Most Detroiters probably won't agree with David Cheruiyot on this one. "I feel good, and the course was good, but the weather was not good," said Cheruiyot (pronounced "chariot") after running his first Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon.

Record number of runners compete, share stories, shed tears

First time marathon runner Malay Patel of Livonia jumps for joy at the finish line of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon on Sunday.

Out of shape and feeling guilty about it, Cathy Vilag and Ena Monteleone decided a good way to get motivated to exercise was to set a goal of running in Sunday’s Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon.

BLOG: Granholm runs, and not for office this time

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and husband Dan Mulhern put on their half marathon medals at the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon on Sunday, October 19, 2008 in Detroit.

You never know who you might see at a marathon. And even though I know that Michigan's governor is an avid runner, I couldn't believe it when there she was two feet away in the starting corral this morning.

Scenes from Sunday's race: Runners celebrate at end

William Hurst, 35, of Grand Rapids and Holger Rapp, 40, of West Bloomfield celebrate as they cross the finish line of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon today in Detroit.

Runner has a goal for the ages

John Kolmetz, 79, has finished every Free Press marathon. He is expected to participate in today's marathon, shooting to return to near the 4:19 he ran in 2006 at age 77. His goal is to break the 80- to 84-year-old age-group record in 2009.

Who says an old runner can't learn new tricks? John Kolmetz of Warren has finished every Detroit Free Press marathon since the first one in 1978, which he recalls ended at the Belle Isle casino.

Memories and triumphs motivate Sunday racers

Nurse Stephanie Kearney, her husband, Kurt Kearney, and her patient Jerrold Weathers, riding in the jogger wheelchair, train Wednesday in Lincoln Park in preparation for Sunday's 31st Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon.

The story of Jerrold Weathers, a quadriplegic, and Stephanie Kearney, his nurse, ranks among the more amazing and inspirational of the 31st Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon.

Mothers inspire their children to run

Lauren Miller, 27, of Garden City, left, sits with her mother, Lynn Miller, 57, a cancer survivor from Ferndale, in a park in Ferndale. Both have participated in the half marathon, and this year, Lauren plans to run her first full marathon.

Lauren Miller went into an April meeting with Free Press/Flagstar Marathon race director Patricia Ball figuring she'd run a half marathon again. She walked out committed to her first true marathon.

Nurse gets patient back into the race

Stephanie and Kurt Kearney prepare quadriplegic Jerrold Weathers of Lincoln Park for a short run in Lincoln Park on Wednesday. Together they plan to do the first 13.1 miles in Sunday's 31st Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon.

If she ends up being too slow this time, the nurse won't hear the end of it from her patient. When Stephanie Kearney of Grosse Ile began working with quadriplegic Jerrold Weathers a few years ago, she told him about a marathon she had finished in 4 1/2 hours. He was amused.

New mom runs to lose pounds, gain confidence

Stacy Vail of Birmingham with son Robert Offman Jr. and her running buddy, Tadhg the dog.

Stacy Vail participated in 24-hour adventure races. She went on 100-mile bike rides. She climbed ropes. She canoed. She did orienteering. She was in the best shape of her life and did anything for an adventure.

Detroiter will test new hips, help Habitat

Bruce Brinson, 51, of Detroit plans to walk the half marathon. He had his first hip replacement surgery last October and the second in December. To prepare, he walked around Belle Isle or from his Detroit condo to his downtown business.

When Bruce Brinson had both hips replaced last year, doctors advised him to never again attempt two things: running and moguling. Bruce, a 51-year-old Detroit business owner, won't disobey doctor's orders, but he will be on the starting line for Sunday's Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon.

Hretz, 26, lives in Athens, Ga., and she planned to run the half marathon in Atlanta. But when she discovered the Free Press marathon would feature a team running for autism, she called her father, Chuck, in Royal Oak.

Running route offers scenic views of Detroit and Windsor

Part of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon's success has been its course. Due to construction, 9/11, adding the half-marathon and a steady growth in participation, the course has changed every year for the past 10 years. This year is no exception.

RiverWalk is latest course feature

About 17,300 people will take part in the Free Press/Flagstar Marathon and its other events on Sunday.

Each year, organizers of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon try to showcase the best of Detroit. For its 31st running on Sunday, they have, while preserving most of the trademark features, added one of the city's newest allures to the lineup: the RiverWalk.

First-timers share their stories

Color coded: First-time participants wear green bibs. Some decide to run for health reasons, some to honor family and friends.

More than 25% of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon runners are represented by first timers who wear green numbers. Here are their stories:
