Receiver Mike Furrey said he had his first symptom-free day and could be close to playing this week after suffering the first concussion of his career two weeks ago against Jacksonville.

“I ran pretty hard today, and (if) my symptoms are gone tomorrow and I don’t have any repercussions from today, I’ll practice tomorrow,” said Furrey, who missed his first game in four seasons last week at Carolina. “And if I wake up Saturday with nothing, I’ll be ready to go Sunday.”

Furrey took part in drills and ran routes without a helmet. When practice started, he left the field to run a mile on the treadmill and lift weights.

Furrey was hurt while playing on the return team during the opening kickoff from the Jaguars. Jacksonville’s Montell Owens came in to tackle Brandon Middleton and hit the back of Furrey’s helmet with his knee. Furrey left the game after the first half, and his symptoms continued the next few days.

“I felt like I was going to throw up all the time,” Furrey said. “It just felt like you’re in the middle of the ocean; you couldn’t get your balance. It hasn’t been fun.”

Last Thursday, Furrey felt better. He did not practice, but he pushed himself in running drills. He felt worse shortly afterward, and on Friday, he had a relapse. Furrey saw a doctor Wednesday who told him running was the worst thing he could have done for the concussion.

“The worst I felt was five days after I got a concussion,” he said. “I don’t think anybody really knew. They told me they can’t really grade a concussion until they see how long your symptoms go. Mine lingered on for a while. Mine still were there till yesterday.

“Hopefully, it’s better today, so hopefully, I won’t have any symptoms tomorrow. There’s a lot of stuff today that I haven’t done in awhile. So hopefully, after tomorrow, I’ll feel better and I’ll be cleared for Sunday.”
